Youth Art Month, Impervious Surface Reductionby admin
February 16th, 2013
The Township Committee met twice this week during regular work and legislative sessions. Among the topics discussed, Mayor David Amlen read a proclamation naming March as Youth Art Month. Additionally, the Township Committee passed an ordinance modifing Recreation Committee meeting dates to four times a year. Finally, Commiteeman David Barnett requested that the Township look into the feasibility of reducing impervious surfaces on municipal land. Sighting a Cranford initiative, David Barnett stated he’d “like to know if Springfield could also make a commitment to reduce impervious surfaces and therefore reduce the amount of water run-off and potential flooding.”
Democrats Win Election Suitby Editor
January 30th, 2013
Wednesday, January 30, 2012 – The Hon. Lisa Chrystal ruled this week that the Springfield Republicans who filed suit in Union County Court to overturn November’s election results had not proven their claim and the election will stand as is. This decision settles the three month long dispute filed by the Fernandez Krauss campaign and solidifies Margaret Bandrowski’s place on the Township Committee. “We are very pleased with the Judge’s ruling and that we can put this matter behind us. This is one less distraction for the members of the Township Committee. Now we can better focus our energy on the business of running the town,” said David Barnett, Chairman of the Democratic Party.
Committee Tackles Flood Mitigation Issuesby Editor
January 13th, 2013
The 2013 Township Committee got right to work this past week taking up the matter of flood mitigation in Springfield. In an effort to reduce the damage caused by future storms, Committeewoman Margaret Bandrowski introduced a resolution to create The Springfield Flood Mitigation Committee. This important committee, made up of resident volunteers, will work at a local, county and state level to bring best practices in development and land use to Springfield. The resolution passed 4-0 by the sitting Democrats (Mr Shehady was not present for the meeting).
Committee Introduces Ordinance to Create Autonomous Board of Healthby Editor
January 2nd, 2013
The Township Committee, in a 4 to 1 vote, approved the introduction of an ordinance to reinstate the autonomous Board of Health. In 2012, the form of the Board of Health was changed to eliminate volunteer residents, in favor of members of the Township Committee. “I feel that it’s in the best interest of the residents of Springfield for the Board of Health to be made up of public health professionals.” commented Deputy Mayor Rich Huber. “This change will ensure that politics don’t get in the way of the public’s well being.” he went on to say.
The final vote on passage of this ordinance will be at the next Township Committee meeting on January 22.
